DEFINITION OF FIJI MEDIA WATCH'S MEDIA MONITORING CONCEPT
Media Monitoring is an important aspect of the work of FMW because the organization began as a monitoring body for airing media concerns. As its name indicates it is a watch dog organization.
Media monitoring allows a systematic surveillance of media performance in order to describe and critically evaluate it. Monitoring helps in detecting changes in media overtime and therefore changes in cultural habits that have the potential to lead the redressing of gender imbalances. Prejudicial media practices are far more likely to change once quantifiable evidence can be supplied in a clear and critical manner.(Lindiwe Sola,WACC volunteer)
This exercise, Media Monitoring requires the regular studying and scrutinizing of the media. It includes monitoring the media content of radio, and television and the print media; newspapers, including advertisements locally produced in Fiji.
In doing so we ensure the media is not used as means to promote dangerous stereotypes and convey messages which offend to the values of Fiji society and also that the media adhere to the ethics outlined in the Fiji Media Council.
FMW has its own criteria of monitoring the media. Most of which is based on safe guarding the dignity of the human person.
